It was he who helped refine Rukia Kuchiki's skills, and he gave Rukia an extra lesson: that the "heart" is the immortal bond between two people, and should one of them die, they will live on in the other person's heart.
Rukia fully understood this after Kaien died and she saw Aaroniero Arurruerie assume his form, and she slew the imposter Kaien without hesitation, since the real Kaien lived on in her. Similarly, when Orihime was told that Ichigo and the others had invaded Hueco Mundo to rescue her, Orihime was not afraid for their sake.
She knew that the heart that connected them would allow them to prevail, and Orihime bravely told Ulquiorra that Ichigo's heart wouldn't allow him to die. Ulquiorra doubted this, but he changed his tune when Ichigo's heart allowed him to slay Ulquiorra at long last. In his dying moments, Ulquiorra was desperate to see this "heart" phenomenon for himself.
Ganju reluctantly joined Ichigo's team to rescue Rukia from her execution, and it was Kukaku who prepared a cannon that would fire Ichigo and his allies into the Gotei 13's fortress inside spirit bubbles.
Ichigo isn't the most creative character in Bleach , but then again, he does have his rogueish and punkish side, and he'll side with anyone and everyone who's trustworthy to get the job done.
He's an open-minded opportunist, in short, and that's why he went along with his cousin Kukaku's wild plan to use that cannon to invade the Gotei 13 going in through the front gate didn't work. A true Shiba can find any solution to a problem, and the more unorthodox, the better. He introduced himself to Rukia and scolded her over her meek reply, treating her like any other Shinigami.
He explained that due to Ukitake's illness, he was usually in charge and told her she could call him "Captain Kaien" if she wished. One day, Kaien brought Rukia a drink and asked her why she looked so troubled.
He told her that as long as she was in his Division, he would stand by her even if he died. Kaien asked them if they were drunk and sent them back to their posts. Kaien trained Rukia in Mt. Koifushi in western Rukongai on a number of occasions. One day while training there, Rukia asked Kaien why she was in the Gotei He told her that it was to fight and protect.
He explained Ukitake's philosophy about there being two types of battle to Rukia, but then told her that he thought that both meant to protect the "heart". He explained about his beliefs of the "heart" to Rukia and told her not to die alone, as when one dies, the heart is left with one's companions, where they would live on.
Kaien was married to the third seat of the 13th Division, Miyako Shiba. When Miyako was killed by the Hollow, Metastacia , her body was brought back. Despite not knowing the name, appearance or powers of the Hollow, Kaien insisted upon going after it rather than waiting for an assault squad to be formed. Ukitake and Rukia accompanied him to the Hollow's lair. Upon seeing the Hollow, Kaien asked for permission to fight it alone, which Ukitake granted.
Kaien asked the Hollow how many Shinigami it had eaten and if it had ever felt sadness or regret about killing. When the Hollow replied that it had regretted not eating the head or torso of a female Shinigami the previous night, Kaien calmly attacked it.
Kaien wonders how such a thing is possible, but continued to fight with his bare hands until Metastacia used its Spirit Body Fusion ability to take control of Kaien's body. Kaien thanks Rukia for the chance to fight for his honor before appearing to die.
The Hollow then used Kaien's body to attack Rukia, but Ukitake stepped in and fought it. When Ukitake realized that the Hollow could not be separated from Kaien, he attacked the Hollow.
However, Ukitake was struck by his illness at that moment and the Hollow attacked Rukia again. Rukia stabbed Kaien as he leapt at her. He also thanked Rukia and apologized to her for dragging her into the fight. He said that she must be torn apart by this and told her that it is thanks to her that his heart could stay here.
Genius Intellect : Kaien was a prodigy when he was younger, although he was modest about the level of intellect and skill he possessed.
To hell with it, I can say that Byakuya and Renji were brothers in their previous lives. Or Ikkaku and Yumichika. And Rangiku with Gin are just a couple pf star-crossed lovers, who are born, meet each other and then one of them dies and go on into the cycle and so on until they are reborn in the same place again, being it SS or the WoL. So also a strange concern. Why worry? Unless…here comes an interesting part…It somehow gives away a twist from the manga, that he himself wanted to reveal as a shocking moment.
And it is a pretty common theory out there. Which is an interesting choice of titles and metaphors…cuz, you know, the sand clock was the exact thing Kubo used in his manga to illustrate the fucking reincarnation in the first place. But that theory is based on the premice that Rukia had been to the real word previous to Aizen sending her there.
And that that might have been the moment Urahara put Hougyoku in Rukia. A twist and a plot point? Foreshadowed early in the manga? Heck yeah. So he must mean that they have met in their previous lives.
Maybe in the real world the once were friends, or lovers, or siblings. Or…And here comes part 2…. I dunno , he should have been a soul in the soul society before that. Ok, ready? Oh, wait, yeah, Kaien-dono. We have Kaien-dono. Exept for the 9th espada. That Hollow could have just been his spiritual form, but not his soul This theory is not only supported by what Ichigo says to Rukia in FtB, but also by what Aizen says about Hougyoku. Ok, he wanted to experiment, wanted to prove his hypothesis.
