Cleaning A Fountain Pen. Guides: Gel Pens. Fine-Tip Gel Pens. White Gel Pens. Quick-Drying Gel Pens. This issue shows up most frequently on large size tips such as on broad, double broad, and other big tips.
Manufacturers like making tips like this because they are really smooth and rarely a problem at the sales counter, where the nib is flooded with dipped ink. These hyper-rounded tips are more common on Pelikan and other European nibs, and can be remedied by a very light re-grind and polishing. We use wheels to speed up this process, but it can also be accomplished using Micromesh 10,, an extremely fine but aggressive polishing fabric. You can wreck your nib if you go too far.
We recommend just a few strokes at a time while the nib is inked so you can see what you are doing. Sailor, Platinum, Nakaya, Namiki, and Pilot nibs usually do not need any of this kind of work. In my next post, Fountain Pen Skipping? Causes and Cures - Part 2 , we'll take a more detailed look at feed issues.

I'll offer another little trick which seemed to help sometimes although it could be a placebo effect. I have heard discussed a number of places that "writing" while rolling the nib back and forth evenly over the galls surface with a new pen on an ink bottle can somtimes smooth the writing experience of a new pen which writes unexpectedly roughly.
My understanding is that the ink bottle effectively acts as ultrafine sand paper. My understanding as well is that a nib that is badly screwed up will not benefit from such a treatment, but at east such a treament falls under the "do no harm" heading that I think we would want to bear in mind for all such tricks.
Frank, please correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that from time to time during the process of making a nib, metal particles are not always completely removed, and cutting oil may be left behind. This may cause a brand new fountain pen to skip, and in this case using an ultrasonic cleaner should take care of the problem. On some hard rubber feeds there may be oils if the feed was cut in a milling machine, but I've never seen this problem except on some extremely cheaply made Chinese pens, and in a few hours the ink washes any oil away.
Piston fillers are uncommon, and vacuum fillers are rare, but they are still available on the market. The Pelikan M is a piston-filler. Piston fillers and vacuum fillers both draw ink into their reservoirs using the pen nib. Some pen enthusiasts swear by ultrasonic cleaners to keep their nib feeds squeaky clean. Personally, I have never had cause to purchase one in my years of pen collecting. However, if recurrent clogs are a problem with your nib feed and the thought of flushing nibs wearies you, an ultrasonic cleaner might help ease the pain of weekly, or even daily, nib flushings.
Unlike cleaning, which is basic maintenance any pen owner should be able to perform, these solutions require a fair bit of confidence on the part of the owner. Advanced pen care requires specialized equipment. It is imperative that you purchase a high-grit sandpaper because lower grit papers will damage the nib. Are there any strange burrs on the area where the two tines meet? Are the two tines level with each other so that ink can flow evenly to the tip? How rounded is the tip of the nib?
New pens that skip often have pen tips are are too rounded. A tip that is too round is called an improperly ground nib. To remedy an improperly ground nib, you will need to grind the nib against 12, grit sandpaper to create a flat surface where the ink can contact the paper. To grind the nib, lay the sandpaper down on a writing surface. Make sure the pen is empty of ink flushing it before starting the grinding process is highly recommended. Make small circles clockwise on the sandpaper.
Do this for a minute. Now counter-clockwise circles. Next, draw diagonal slashes moving from left to right, and then right to left. Make forward slashes low to high and backslashes high to low. Finally, make small circles that gradually change into larger, wider circles each time you move the pen across the sandpaper. The idea behind these exercises is to grind the nib in multiple directions. When you use a pen, the nib contacts the paper in a variety of angles.
